Gossan zone iron mineralization & goethite rio tinto mine elko co. nevada
The Rio Tinto mine is named after the famous massive sulfide deposits in Spain. The mine is well known in NV for its coppers but I have never seen any other minerals from the mine. For some of my faithful customers that have purchased my various ores from Ducktown over the years, this is throwback and very similar to the rare gossans that occur above the Appalachian massive sulfide deposits. The Rio Tinto mine operated on and off for over hundred years. Rio Tinto was Nevada's second largest copper operation during WW2 and supplied massive amounts of copper for the Allies but unfortunately, after WW2 copper prices plummeted and the mine closed. Site is now remediated and fortunately a friend was able to acquire me some samples. very heavy pieceSome nice shiny goethite in various iron mineralization and limonite.
