C1893 college baseball football tennis tobacco tin chyp inter-collegiate tobacco

Sold Want to Buy This?

Very Rare and beautiful, ca1893, Lithograph Square Corner Tobacco Tin with Baseball, Football, Rowing, and Tennis motif decoration which contained “C.H.Y.P. Inter-Collegiate Mixture" Smoking Tobacco manufactured by Cameron & Cameron of Richmond, Virginia. This fantastic, square tobacco tin measures approx. 4 3/8” x 3 1/4” x 2 1/4” tall and originally contained 6 or 8 ounces of C.H.Y.P. Inter-Collegiate Brand Tobacco. Offered here is an orange-tone variation of this rare and beautiful Tin which we have never seen before. The letters in the Brand Name represent 4 Ivy League Colleges (Colgate, Harvard, Yale and Princeton) and the top panel of the tin features Collegiate Banner Flags of each of these prestigious Universities. Also on the top panel there appears a football, baseball bats and balls, a rowing skull and a VERY early tennis racket, tennis ball and tennis court. One side panel features a fantastic image of 2 Baseballs and 4 crossed baseball bats. The Bats have painted lines encircling the barrels and their handles are thick as was the style of bat used in the late 19th century. The opposite side panel has a wonderful image of a 4 man skull in action with the rowers pulling down a river (perhaps competing in the Head of the Charles regatta). It is also marked Factory No. 4, 2nd District of Virginia and has the elaborate Cameron & Cameron Trade Mark (which looks like a State Seal) on the back panel. Again it should be noted that this is a very rare color variation of this already very rare tobacco tin. A bright orange color replaces the yellow color found on the more common variation and brown replaces most of the black color found on the more common variation. This color difference gives the Tin a brighter and much more attractive "look" as well as more accurately depicting the Ivy League College colors, pennants and the color of the Football. We have included a single scan of the more common (although also very rare) color variation as the last scan below. The tin is signed by the manufacturer -S. A. Isley & Co of New York - and is beautifully lithographed in the Isley style. On this ca1893 example the bottom of the tin is embossed with a notice that Cameron & Cameron was Awarded the Highest Prize for Cigarettes, Smoking Mixtures and Plug Tobacco at the 1893 World’s Fair / Columbian Exposition. This very rare and stunningly beautiful 19th century tin litho Tobacco Tin is in very good condition - the colors are bright and vibrant with no fading or staining. All of the lithographed panels are very well preserved with some scattered, small surface nicks to each of the panels and with some wear at the edges of the top panel of the lid. The Tin has no significant flaking and the surface is stable and strong. Overall this very elaborate, College Sports Tin is well preserved, very attractive and displays beautifully. A very rare and very beautiful, 19th century American Tobacco Tin by S. A. Isley with images of Baseball, Football, Tennis and Rowing and a fantastic addition to any collection!!! c1892 IVY LEAGUE C.H.Y.P.
