Bb: fl calcite w/ sulphur from maybee, michigan - big & bright!
Species: Calcite, Sulphur Locality: Stoneco Quarry, Maybee, Monroe Co., Michigan Size: Large cabinet - 12.5 x 10.5 x 5.5 cm Weight: 822 g Number: 1227Details: A large, excellent fluorescent/phosphorescent specimen from a classic locality for calcite, sulphur and celestine. The small, sugary white calcite crystals fluoresce a very bright, cool "snow white" under all UV wavelengths (description from Manuel Robbins' Fluorescence: Gems and Minerals under Ultraviolet Light, the fluorescent collectors' bible) and phosphoresce strongly in a greenish white. The sulphur seems to glow deep green, but I believe that's just the natural yellow color altered by the cool bluish white coming through it from the fluorescing calcite. It still looks neat! NOTE: shipping outside the U.S. will cost almost as much as this item. NOTES ON ULTRAVIOLET:The higher quality the UV source, the better fluorescent minerals look. Key factors include lamp wattage, UV spectrum and filtration, as well as distance from lamp to specimen. For best results with any UV source, observe against a dark, non-fluorescent, non-reflective background, in complete darkness with eyes adapted. The photos here are taken using UV Systems SuperBright II (shortwave, midwave, longwave-350) and Philips BLB (longwave-370) lamps, metered and exposed to show fluorescent response to best advantage. ° ° ° ° ° Please read before bidding! ° ° ° ° °* For combined shipping of Auction Items, send a message!
