Antique paper dolls toy 1890s boston sunday herald lady 1 doll w/21 gowns vtg
In the mid 1890s, The Boston Herald Newspaper came up with the idea to put a paper doll supplement in the Sunday issue to increase circulation. I'm not sure it it worked but the gowns have some of the most gorgeous art work I've ever seen. There were gowns for sports, the opera, afternoon tea parties and many more occasions. There were only 2 dolls for 38 gowns, making the dolls VERY difficult to find. They were just played with to death since there were 38 new gowns to try on them. These were lithographic printed and for that reason, the colors remain vivid to this day, 123 years later. I have a huge collection of antique paper dolls and toys. Photos will be taking me weeks to complete, so keep coming back to see what I have newly listed. Overall, there may be tears, creases, or writing on the backs of them. Please view the photos closely for the best description. I'm trying to be very through with them. This a super rare all original set with the original blonde doll and 21 of the 36 original gowns. The gowns in the photo with the doll are the wedding gown and the bridesmaid gown. I will be sending a copy of "Antique Fashion Paper Dolls of the 1890s" as a reference guide to ID the various gowns. It also gives some of the history of these amazing antique paper toys. Only 30 0f the 38 gowns are pictured in it. My huge paper doll collection has come from estates, other collectors and eBay. I don't know previous storage history and they could have been in homes where smoking has occurred. I have a poor sense of smell at my age and I don't know if that lingers. My collection is stored in a smoke/pet free area of my home, with a dehumidifier running 24/7. Please see photos for condition and content. Thanks for taking an interest in this antique paper toy. All questions are welcome!!!
