2 (two) fischer vs spassky '72 chess championship medals: silver & bronze
This auction is for 2 (two) commemorative medals from the World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland 1972 where Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky played. One is Sterling Silver and the other Bronze. The coins are 4 cm. in diameter. Bronze coin is 28 grams and the silver coin is 31 grams sterling silver. The obverse shows a map of Iceland and reads WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - REYKJAVIK - 1972. The reverse shows two chess pieces (Knights) with the names R.J. FISHER and B. SPASSKY under each piece. These were in high demand when purchased. 2700 sterling silver pieces were minted and 2300 bronze medals were struck. The 1972 Medals are in UN-circulated condition. Issued to commemorate the 1972 World Chess Championship which was held in Reykjavik, Iceland. Issued by the Icelandic Chess Federation. The medals come with a wooden holder and certificate as pictured.
